A reminder to all collectors....

The art market continues to flourish and many artists are setting new highs for their works.

Your art is a treasured asset and as many of you are used to a house being reappraised, many have forgotten to update our other valuables.

Please let me know if you have Fine Art or Photography that needs to be appraised or reappraised.
These pieces should be reviewed every few years. In many instances, based on market conditions, this could mean every 2 years.

Your personal property are assets that need to be ....... Appraised and Reappraised.
A BRIEF GRAPHICS: PRINT GLOSSARY

Prints are the result of a collaborative process between an artist and a skilled printmaker. The artist creates an original image on a matrix (which may be made of copper, zinc, stone, woodblock, mesh screen, depending on the method to be used) and the printmaker directs the mechanical process of reproducing the original image through the application of ink and the use of a printing press.

The distinguishing characteristic of prints is reproducibility; however, prints are not infinitely reproducible. The surfaces upon which the original images are created are very sensitive and can be used for a limited number of runs. Therefore, prints come in numbered editions.

The four basic/general genres of printmaking include; Intaglio, Relief Printing, Planographic and Digital.

Intaglio
Meaning to incise, relies upon the creation of an image through the carving of a metal plate. A few techniques are etching and aquatint. An aquatint is an etching process in which ink is made to bite both lines and tonal areas on a copper plate. An aquatint has an effect celebrating tone and is similar to a watercolor. An etching focuses more on line rather than tone. An etching is drawn/scratched in to a metal plate creating grooves to hold the ink. The technique yields an elevated character to the lines, which is the signature trait of n etching.

Relief Printing
Relief printing requires the artist to use a negative technique to generate an image. Instead of drawing what he/she wants to be inked or appear as dark, the artist cuts out what he does not want to be inked (what will appear as simply the paper or negative space). The principle relief techniques are woodcut, linocut and wood engraving.

Planographic
Refers to printing methods in which the ink of the final print lies flat on the paper, not raised or impresses. Techniques include lithography and screen printing to name just two. Lithography yields images that tend to be more painterly and shares quality of colored pencil drawings, crayon or even pastel drawings. To make a screen print, an image has been cut out of paper or fabric and is attached to a piece of tautly stretched mesh. Paint is forced through the mesh (screen) onto a sheet of paper beneath using a squeegee. The uncovered areas of the screen allow the paint to pass through onto the paper, while the areas covered by the compositional shapes are not. For works with more than one color, a separate screen is used for each color, or the same screen must be washed and remade each time. Andy Warhol was the first artist to extensively use this technique.
PHOTOGRAPHY EXPANSION

With the growth of post-war and contemporary art, so too is the edition of photography being included as an integral part of a strong collection.

Major retrospectives continue to circle the globe. Most recent is that of Gary Winogrand, which premiered in San Francisco, traveled to Washington, D.C., is currently in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through September 21, and then on to Paris and Madrid.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has long been renowned for its photography. Most recently however, the museum announced that as part of its expansion project (it expects to reopen in 2016) it will create a center with more than 11,000 square feet devoted to photography exhibitions. This space will be the largest in the country to be used solely for that purpose, and thereby doubling the amount of space devoted to photographs and allowing curators to triple the number of pictures from the museums's own collection that they can exhibit yearly.

The steady efforts of; curators of photography at museums, galleries and countless collectors have paved the way for the appreciation photography enjoys today. While early, modern photographers asserted the value of the medium, it was only decades later that the market and appetite for collecting began to have an equal footing as art.

The best way to collect and experience is of course in person, in a setting and with time to enjoy, examine and take in all aspects of the work or works. What makes a good photograph is what speaks to you. What makes a photograph more valuable is the strength of the image, condition, provenance, rarity, artists reputation and public displays to name a few.

So let's celebrate this ever expanding medium and the continued appetite to live with wonderful images around us that make us smile, laugh, remember and simply enjoy.
11 PHOTOGRAPHERS AMONG WINNERS OF 2014 GUGGENHEIM FELLOWSHIPS

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced the recipients of their 2014
fellowships. Eleven photographers are among the 178 recipients.

Matthew Pillsbury, a highlight not only an earlier blog of mine, but also a photographer both I and many of my clients have added to there growing collections over the past many months, is one of the eleven recipients. His award was based on his most recent series which is currently photographing Japan. An article also appeared in the New York Times Magazine section on April 25th called a Country In Bloom which highlighted some of these beautiful images.

Matthew Pillsbury (born in Neuilly, France, 1973) received his BA in fine art from Yale University in 1995 and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2004.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is widely held in private and museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Musee du Louvre, Paris and Tate Modern to name a few.

ART DESIGN TIPS AND REMINDERS

Art lovers understand the importance of keeping their work out of harms way. Millions are spent

purchasing fine art each year (ok let us not include the recent Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons, Edvard Munch

and other record setting works). Let's just consider works more "everyday" people buy to have and

enjoy. It is important you protect your fine art from destructive forces both in your office and home.

LIGHT FEATHER DUSTING

Most paintings and wall hangings can be cleaned with a light feather duster or cotton T-shirt.

QUALITY FRAMES

All art, including textiles, photographs and paper should be framed using museum-quality materials

and professional conservation techniques. Ask potential framers about their conservation procedure

and the materials they use.

MOISTURE

Moisture can ruin your fine artwork. Be careful where you place art. A small often used bathroom

and a steamy shower can cause havoc. Big temperature changes can be damaging over time.

UV-BLOCKING SHADES/WINDOWS

The sunlight streaming through your windows may be enjoyable, but the UV rays that accompany it

can damage your precious works leading to fading to paintings and photographs and canvases to

possibly warp.

OVERALL: SHOW YOUR ART IN THE "BEST LIGHT"

What a wonderful gift to warm ones heart. An image that brings back a memory. A photograph that captures a moment in time. A photograph that simply makes one smile……………..

I am posting just a few "seasonal" images, and as with all my clients and potential clients, we will work together to find the photograph that will make that perfect gift. A gift that does last forever.

Over the past decade, Matthew Pillsbury has built several extensive bodies of work-Screen Lives, Hours, and City Stages-that deal with different facets of contemporary metropolitan life and the passage of time. A variety of these I have included on my website. Through the use of a large-format camera using long exposures, Pillsbury captures a range of experiences in the urban environment. And rather than being pictures of landmarks, they reflect the blurred lived experience.

"I think of these as places that are awaiting the drama of our lives to come and fill them". (Pillsbury)

We are in a new era of the art market as salesrooms overflow with collectors.

How much is a half-billion dollars?

It's the amount the U.S. government has budgeted to combat climate change in 2013.

It's about how much the Romney campaign raised last year.

It's about how much money was spent during a single night at the Christie's postwar and contemporary sale last month.

Expect to see more milestones with newer artists, prices of artworks in the thousands in the teens and more, as art grows both as a collectible and also as a financial asset.

On Thursday, March 21 2013, a wonderful article entitled The Lens Rises in Stature appeared in the New York Times. For those of you who want the condensed version, museum photography departments across the country are attracting curators, seasoned professionals and directors who realize that photography exhibitions attract crowds.

More space, more exhibits and no fighting for wall space, photographs are appearing in one man shows like William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman and an upcoming Gary Winogrand show starting in California...to name a few.

The "Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America" is at the Milwaukee Museum. "The City Dynamic: Representing Crisis and Renewal in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles" is opening at the Art Institute in Chicago in October 2014.

At the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, whose photography department was founded in 1983 had fewer than 3,000 photographs in its collection; today it has some 15,000.

Although the Museum of Modern Art is younger than the Met, it started putting together its collection in 1930, a year after its founding- and a decade later the museum establishes a separate photography department. It now has a world-calss collection of modern and contemporary works.

Don't miss out on exploring collecting photography not only as being art in your home, but also as an investment in your future.

Photograpy and its value is continuing its rise and overlap with the broader modern and contemporary art market.

Big museums are also giving much more attention to fine art photography, which is certainly increasing its exposure. The Metropolitan Museum show Faking It, was an exhibition devoted to the history of manipulated photography before the digital age. The National Gallery in London show Seduced by Art, was its first major photography exhibition, looking at how past and present photographers employ fine art traditions. The Tate, as noted in my earlier blog, highlighted the works of William Klein. The Museum of Fine Art, Boston, paid tribute to Ori Gersht, an up-and-coming Israeli-born photographer, and a favorite in my own collection.

The exposure is boasting demand from collectors: demand that is now global, not just concentrated in the US or Europe.

"We've seen a huge increase in people that want to become serious collectors of photography and get into this market quite deep. Photography is a language that everyone can understand.

Buying photography is an opportunity to own great art at a lower price.

Great art is great art......whatever the medium.
AND AWAY WE GO

We are already stepping into 2103 and that means the start of another exciting auction season.

Beginning in March, the 3 major auction houses, Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips (along with

Swann and Doyle) are ready to draw in the growing number of new and existing collectors to

Photography and Contemporary Art.

I preview all of the catalogues and many of the auctions in New York for both myself and clients.

For potential purchases it is most important not only to get the condition report, but also to check the condition of each work of art in person.

I welcome your questions and interest to be a participant.

For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to attend an auction in person, they are available to watch "live" online (for Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips). Although they are not quite as exciting as being there in person.......they are still a thrill.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

As I look forward to a Happy and Healthy New Year, I leave you with one of my favorite images and in fact the first photo I ever purchased for myself over 25 years ago. It is also available for purchase.

I few months ago I was at a clients house who already had many wonderful pieces of art and casually asked if if the pieces were insured. Well maybe it wasn't so casual.....His wife happened to have been standing next to us and I saw the look. You know the look. The look that says no and I have only been mentioning for years that we need to do that.

The collection and since that visit, additions to the collection, warranted an Appraisal for Insurance purposes. I have since done such an appraisal for approximately 25 pieces and he is now properly insured.

Not only is it important to have art approved for insurance purposes, but also to have art Re-Appraised every couple of years. The art market and values are constantly changing and has become an investment class of its own.

Please call me if your need any such appraisals. Art Insurance is vital.

As many of you know we are ready to welcome not only the end of summer, but also the beginning of the Fall Auction Season. With auctions at the larger auction houses including Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips, and at smaller venues, there is a wide variety to choose from.

You can view lots online at each of the respective sights.

If you are interested in any of the lots please let me know. It is always important to view the lots condition in person of which I am available to do. I am also available to help you with all parts of the bidding process.

Please continue to view my website as changes/additions are frequently made. The newest changes should be available on Monday, September 9th. The images/artists represented are just a sampling of the art market and what is available. It is a personal process that I go through with each client to find those artists and images that they would love to live with.

I am sharing a brief tribute to one of my favorite fashion photographers: William Klein (born in 1928-)

Klein achieved widespread fame as a fashion photographer for Vogue. His work was considered revolutionary for its ambivalent and ironic approach in media and his extensive use of unusual photographic techniques in the context of photojournalism and fashion photography.

He is ranked 25th on the Professional Photographers Top 100 Most Influential Photographers.

I am delighted to announce that William Klein will be in London to receive the Sony World Photograph 'Outstanding Contribution to Photography' Award.

Please see pieces of William Klein's works at www.jillwendroffgunter.com
